The type of love that prompts one to do whatever he can to meet a need of the other, even when trusted resources fail to help him meet that need The type of love that enables one to see through the confusion of pride and misunderstanding and emerge strong and victorious The type of love that frees one to let down his guard and drop his defense because his soul feels safe with another Love isn’t always so simple what type of love am I talking about? There are many types of love, you may point out. The movie is aptly named “Melody” because she is the centerpiece that the boys trip over-the catalyst that stirs and causes emotions to rise and tumble forth in all their beauty, pain, and angst, as love often does to challenge its bearers. Melody, played by Tracy Hyde, plays a pivotal role in affecting that friendship. I believe the movie, which came out 44 years ago, is more about the close friendship between Ornshaw and Daniel, played exquisitely by the late Jack Wild and Mark Lester it is simply a story about love.

The movie is often described as being “a movie about puppy love,” referring to the charming story line about Daniel Latimer and Melody Perkins. If you’ve never seen the 1971 movie “Melody,” I highly recommend doing what you have to in order to get a copy of this five-star gem. Melody, which might have been called Youth in Revolt, Part 1, has an innocence and charm that go down easy, that is, if you can overlook the disturbing implications of what the film is actually saying.Ornshaw and Daniel at the track meet in “Melody” The high point of the film for me, however, is the ersatz marriage ceremony led by Ornshaw and the resulting mayhem that follows.Although Pascal said, "The heart has its reasons that reason knows nothing of", reason becomes a major casualty when parents and teachers from the school descend en masse to the railroad viaduct where the marriage ceremony is being held, leading to a hilarious if rather implausible conclusion. There is also Melody's father Roy Kinnear who cannot stop telling stories in the most inappropriate situations.

Daniel has a school buddy who wants to become an expert in explosives and his trial and error escapades bring a lot of laughs. There are also moments of rich humor in the film. Needless to say, the parents are clueless but since they are adults and the story is told by children for children - that is understandable if regrettable.Written by future director Alan Parker and produced by David Puttnam Chariots of Fire, Melody is strongly enhanced by its musical score which contains some outstanding songs by the Bee Gees such as "Teach Your Children", "To Love Somebody", and "Working on It Night and Day". Latimer's pal Ornshaw Wild of course feels left out and tries to steer Daniel towards more commonly accepted mischief but eventually his frustration leads to a brawl and the need for reconciliation. Ĭan charitably be called chaos.Melody Parker Tracy Hyde is the love interest and her natural beauty and grace make it at least understandable how an upscale lad like Daniel Latimer Lester could be smitten, even at his tender age. Alas, albeit it is on DVD, the copy is not a very good one, with muted colors and a somewhat jittery transfer. In Argentina, this movie is now finally being redistributed, by a small private company. The farcical view on authority and that funny ending, which could be called a teenage The Graduate.I have since been looking in vain for a copy of this movie or for the chance to watch it again and again and again.- Update: I found it. a scene that has no dialog, and it is just played with music and visual narration. It is a testament to this film that after watching it only once, I not only remember the film fondly, but that some scenes are still etched in my mind: The Frere Jacques scene as the two main characters talk about how they feel.

That this movie had told perhaps our own story of first love and touched us in a way perhaps no one else had before, in a way we would not forget, we could not forget.I am 33 now, I grew to work in the TV and film industry both in Argentina and abroad and have watched literally thousands of films since. we could tell when we looked at each others' eyes that we were lying. we were not willing to admit we had seen and liked a "love" story - a chick film. if those stupid boys would wise up one day. Girls would probably whisper if it could happen to them, too. My guess is that I was probably about the same age of the main characters when I sat in front of the set.I remember also the following day at school, as all the boys and girls that had watched it would whisper about it.
